STARTING A BUSINESS IN
WASHINGTON COUNTY

STEP ONE
Assuming you have already evaluated your new business idea and you have prepared a written business plan...go to step two.  You, also, need to determine your business structure options.  Will it be a sole proprietorship? A General Partnership? A Limited Partnership? A Business Corporation? A S Corporation or Professional Corporation? etc.

STEP THREE

Review the material carefully so you can assess and identify which local, state, and federal requirements are necessary for your business.

Most businesses must perform the following actions in the beginning:

  You may need to file articles or certificates of incorporation or organization with the Utah Department of Commerce.

  Complete the Utah State Business and Tax Registration application.  This application allows you to :  Register a business name with the Department of Commerce and apply for certain state tax licenses with the Utah State Tax Commission.

All individuals and partnerships conducting business under an assumed name (DBA: Doing Business As") must register within 30 days of starting a business.

  Apply to the IRS for a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN)

Apply for Worker's Compensation Insurance

Check zoning requirements in your local city or county offices.

Obtain a city or county business license from the city or county in which you will do business.

Check with the Department of Commerce to see if your business requires a special state license: i.e. contractors/ accounting, food handling, etc.

If your business is a home based business check with the city for any requirements or permits needed.

STEP FOUR

Obtain a City Business License...

Be prepared to have:

1.  Name of Business-Your name or DBA
2.  Address
3.  Sales Tax Number
4.  Federal Tax ID
5.  Copy of State License if needed
6.  Fees - $50 + plus $10 for each full-time
employee and $5 for each part-time employee.
