June Issue of Department of Workforce Services Newsletter

The Utah Department of Workforce Services has published the June issue of Workforce News. Washington County?s year-to-year job losses hit 8 percent in December 2008. That represents the loss of more than 4,300 jobs and ended 2008 with the first annual employment loss in Washington County since 1974. While almost every major industry was hit by recessionary declines, construction accounted for nearly three-fourths of the employment loss. City of St. George Enters Stage One of the Culinary Drought Management Plan

The City of St. George Council passed a resolution to enact Stage One of the Culinary Drought Management plan with an additional mandatory watering restriction prohibiting day time watering. Stage one of the plan asks residents and businesses to voluntarily implement conservation strategies such as washing only full loads of laundry, checking for and repairing leaks, repairing misaligned or broken sprinkler heads. First Annual Climb to Conquer Cancer

The Red Mountain Spa, in conjunction with the American Cancer Society, will be holding their First Annual "Climb to Conquer Cancer" event to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. Volunteers are the heart of Zion Way Hospice. Hospice volunteers provide friendship, companionship and support to hospice patients and their families. Volunteers, after the appropriate certification and training, can also help the staff in the art of their complementary services such as music therapy, art therapy, massage therapy, pet therapy, aroma therapy and therapeutic touch. Volunteer opportunities are also available for non-patient related areas such as office work filing, computer input, assembling information packets, telephone support and reception work. UDOT Region 4 Weekly Construction Report

The Utah Department of Transportation has selected to reconstruct the Bluff Street Interchange (Exit 6) at I-15 in St. George, Utah. Finish work and clean up will continue in the area. Crews will also be working along Bluff Street on a separate project to upgrade traffic signal functions. No major traffic impacts expected this week. At the Atkinville Interchange (I-15 Milepost 2), chipping of ramps and adjacent parkway will get underway. The interchange should only be affected for one day. Workers will continue landscaping. The adjacent rest area is being used for retaining wall construction. Traffic control as chipping of ramps begins. The east side of the interchange accessing the Southern Parkway remains closed to the public. On I-15; Washington To Cottonwood Creek, Milepost 10 to 19, there will be nighttime paving. Orthodox Christian Chapel of St.George Announces New Meeting Times
The Orthodox Chapel of St. George has new meeting times. Vespers will be meeting on Saturdays at 6:30 pm and Orthros and Typikas will be meeting on Sundays at 10:30 am. These meetings will be held at the side chapel of Grace Episcopal Church, located at 1072 East 900 South in St.George. For more information, call 505-715-2512.
